A Guide To CBD For Pets

As the CBD industry continues to grow, in sales and consumers, it is no doubt making new waves in the world today. The benefits of Cannabidiol can indeed not be overemphasized as people see it as a wonder-working product. It is very beneficial to the health sector as it has been proven to effectively and efficiently treat certain ailments.

The health sector has been flooded with many CBD products from CBD brands and companies. Claims have been made that it is a pain reliever, it is used to treat seizures, and epilepsy, it fights against the growth of cancerous cells, it reduces anxiety, it increases appetites and even reduces inflammation.

From the above, we can see that many of the health conditions humans suffer affect pets too. Since CBD works for humans, can it work for pets too?  Pet owners have begun to wonder whether effective CBD treatments can also work for their pets. Can they benefit from CBD products?

If you’re confused, here is a brief guide to what you need to know about CBD for pets.

First, you need to know what CBD is and clear up some misconceptions.

Cannabidiol, popularly and widely known as CBD is one of the many cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant. It is very popular alongside Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is a different cannabinoid present in the cannabis plant. It is different from CBD in structure and content. THC is the compound that gets one high when marijuana is taken. CBD, on the other hand, does not give a feeling of highness when taken. With the signing of the Farm Bill in December 2018, CBD is no longer on the list of scheduled drugs; it is now seen as an agricultural product. This means that CBD is legal. However, the legal CBD is one made from hemp and has less than 0.3% of THC.

The fact that hemp-derived CBD has less than 0.3% of THC and cannot get one high in that regard is why it is very much sought for by a lot of people. This is why they are interested in it. If I can get a cannabis product to treat me without getting me high, why not? This is the belief of many, and in this regard,  pet owners are still confused as to whether CBD products will get their pets high or not. As a pet owner, you should bear in mind that concrete research has not been done and studies have not been carried out to ascertain how much THC it takes for its psychoactive properties to work on pets. Carrying out this study may depend on certain factors such as age,  pet type, breed, size, and so on.

You should also bear in mind that animals process CBD differently from humans.

Humans are higher animals, and therefore, there are certain things we can do those normal animals, including pets, cannot do. Our body and systems process and react differently. All mammals have an Endocannabinoid System (ECS). This ECS manages, directs, and controls certain functions in them, such as energy balance, sleep, appetite, mood, pain, and responses. In essence, it means that CBD can be processed by all mammals. The CBD works with the ECS to increase the activities of the body. However, since there are variations between the ECS of mammals, different species will process it in different ways.

If you check online, over the Internet, you will find out that most of the research and studies on CBD for pets are mostly for dogs. So what about cats? What about those who keep rabbits as a pet? Well, dogs are the most popular pets hence the focus. These researches support the use of CBD products on dogs, stating that it works on them as it works on humans. This is to say that it helps treat anxiety, epileptic seizures, joint pains, and increases appetites in dogs. There is, however, no research concerning cats and CBD use. There is evidence though that it could help treat cats with anxiety issues or joint pains. CBD products are open to cats, but caution should be taken when administering CBD to your cat.

What CBD Can Do For Your Pet

Generally, amongst humans, CBD is used to reduce pain, treat anxiety, reduce inflammation, increase appetite, and treat seizures. The CBD industry is a new one; in fact, it was made legal in 2018, and research on it is still in its infancy stage. In spite of that, it has made tremendous growth and is moving very fast. Yet, there is little research on it, on how it affects humans, talk more of pets.

Well, CBD products have been used on pets, and it has been proven to be working. CBD oil has mostly been used on dogs, and it helps them a lot. For instance, it helps in strengthening their muscles, moisturizing their fur, helps them get over separation anxiety, reduce pain from arthritis, treats their skin diseases, and so on. A research was done in Colorado State University, and some dogs were put on a CBD trial. It has shown that 89% of these dogs had a reduction in the frequency of their seizures.

Choosing the right CBD product for your pet

There are certain things you need to consider when choosing a CBD product for your pet. However, before starting a CBD treatment for your pet, you need to visit a vet and find out if CBD is right for your pet.

Next, you find out the right dosage of CBD your pet needs to take and how to get the pet to consume it. It is advised that you start with a low dosage, to find out how your pet reacts to it, then you can slowly increase the dose. This is the same for humans; starting with a low dose and increasing it with time.

As to how your pet will consume CBD, you may decide if it will take it internally or externally. For dogs, you may decide to include it in your dog’s food or put it directly in its mouth. For cats, the reverse is the case, as CBD creams, salves,  and balms as topical treatments work better for them.

You also need to buy organic CBD products for your pets, because they work faster. But how do you know if a CBD product is organic? CBD products come with packaging and label that show if the product is organic or not. Good CBD brands and companies usually give a breakdown of what their CBD products contain; you could find it in their product label or on their websites. You should also check the content of cannabinoid of any CBD product before purchase. Follow the guidelines and adhere to instructions while administering CBD products to your pet.

Are there any risks associated with giving your pets CBD treatments?

As long as CBD contains less than 0.3% of THC, it is considered relatively safe. However, there are still some risks associated with giving your pets CBD treatments. This is because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stated that CBD should not be used as a medication, but as a supplement. This means that CBD products are not subject to testing by the FDA. Therefore, your use of CBD products for your pets is at your own risk.

Finally, be sure to always make sure you give your pet the right treatment at all times.
